But first, what’s new on Netflix?
A high-altitude romance. Jeff Zimbalist and Maria Bukhonina’s documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, about a pair of rooftoppers attempting a daring stunt, has now been released. Prefer to stay on the ground? Step into the dark underbelly of LA in Homicide: Los Angeles, the new limited series from Law & Order creator Dick Wolf (and a follow-up to this spring’s Homicide: New York) in which detectives and prosecutors share insight about some of their most memorable homicide cases. Looking for something a little sweeter? Let Harry Connick Jr. charm you in Find Me Falling, Stelana Kliris’ new rom-com about a lonely rock star who tries to get away from it all by escaping to Cyprus, where he finds more excitement than he bargained for.
If you have just a night …
See another side of the city. In 2016’s Divines, Oulaya Amamra stars as Dounia, a determined teenage girl living in the banlieues on the outskirts of Paris and dreaming of a life of wealth and status. She starts down a dark path in pursuit of these goals, taking her best friend (Déborah Lukumuena) with her, but an encounter with a dancer (Kévin Mischel) inspires a new and different hope for her future. The first feature from French filmmaker Houda Benyamina, the Golden Globe-nominated coming-of-age drama won the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 2016, as well as three Césars.
If you have a whole day …
Steal away awhile. George Kay’s slick heist thriller Lupin stars Omar Sy as Assane Diop, a very smooth criminal who models himself after Maurice Leblanc’s century-old character Arsène Lupin — the ultimate gentleman thief and master of disguise. As elegant and inventive as his inspiration, Assane lives in today’s Paris, where he uses his unique talents to take revenge on the wealthy family who ruined his father. The whole series, which comprises of 17 episodes split into three parts, lasts just over 13 hours. That’s rather a full day of streaming, but once you’ve started, it will be hard to stop until you’ve seen what tricks Assane has up his sleeve — and whether he can pull it all off.
If you have the entire weekend …
Consider the expat life. Follow the Kretz family, who own a luxury real estate agency in France, as they show some of the most enviable properties in Paris (and beyond) in The Parisian Agency: Exclusive Properties; Louis XIV himself would struggle to find fault with some of their lavish listings. And if the fabulous homes aren’t quite enough to carry you through the whole weekend, close things out with dessert: The four-episode limited series Chef’s Table: France provides a delectable sampling of the country’s celebrated cuisine, all served with an innovative twist. By the time Monday arrives, you’ll be desperate to book a flight.
Don’t forget, you have one last chance …
… to open your eyes. Tim Burton’s biopic Big Eyes tells the story of the artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) took credit for her wildly popular paintings of big-eyed subjects in the ’60s. Take a good look this weekend, before it’s gone.
